Mix one change at a time
Once a prompt gives you a result you like, treat it as your base. Then:
- Change one layer only. Swap the outfit, or the setting, or the film look, but never all three at once.
- Replace like for like. Swap a specific phrase for another specific phrase: "teal taffeta gown" instead of "nice dress".
- Leave the first sentence alone. The keep-my-face line should stay word for word.
- Undo instead of rewriting. If a result gets worse, go back to the previous version of the prompt.

Common problems and fixes
It looks like a costume party, not a real photo
Usually the film layer is missing, or there is too much neon. Add grain, faded color and flash, and cut the outfit down to one main piece.
Details from the 70s or 90s creep in
Remove vague style words such as "retro" and "vintage", and keep a specific year like 1985. Name period objects: a boombox, a rotary phone, a wood-cabinet TV.
Modern objects appear in the background
End the prompt with "no smartphones, modern cars, logos or text", and crop busy modern backgrounds out of your upload before you start.
Changing the hair also changed the face
Big hair changes can shift how the face is drawn. Check that the keep-my-face sentence is still at the start, and try a less dramatic hair phrase.
